Default 5/6 gear whine!

I'm still working out the kinks on my project, and I just replaced the 3/4 shift fork in my t56. The other problem it has is 5/6th gear whine, but everything looked good when I replaced the fork. Should I be worried, and what are the possible issues?

It did go on/come off without much effort(by hand). Would this just cause vibration though? There isn't any vibration, just the whining.

Noise is vibration to your ears.

A gear allowed to operate loosely like that is going to lose proper mesh with it's opposing gear. And the effect is excess noise. In this case, the whining is louder than the vibrations, or at least more noticeable to you.

This can happen even with the tapered bearings in good shape and within tolerance for shimming. Left alone, it will grind down the 6th gear i.d., bearing, and countershaft extension o.d.

So it looks like I need a new main shaft, I'm assuming it isn't safe to drive in this condition?
