Default Mod Hell....Or Should I Just Say Hell

I had the V in storage for a little over a month while out of town...locked in the garage, under the car cover, as usual. Today I headed to the garage with the intention of readjusting the clutch. I started it to get it centered in the lift and immediately notice a loud, pronounced tick...which was not there when I parked it a month ago. I drained the oil thinking a rocker may have puked the bearings and found this:

Here is a pic of what it looks like when it's not chewed up:

For those that don't already know, this is the plunger retainer ring for an LS7 lifter. Seems that my kid brother decided to pull the V out so he and his idiot friends could rattle can his $500 pickup in my shop...the only thing I can assume is that he was revving the **** out of it for the amusement of everyone there. I have about 1200 miles on the new cam and heads, looks like the heads will be coming back off.

You might get lucky and it will be the first head you pull.

Think positive.

Oh...the good times don't stop there. I also serviced my DD (oil change, rotate tires, rear brake adjust) and my Suburban (oil change, tire rotation, and front pads). I headed out to seat the pads on the Suburban and blew the master cylinder on the first hard hit of the pedal.

Think it's time for a vacation.

Looking at these: http://www.briantooleyracing.com/btr...r-lifters.html

The Lunati and Morels are nice pieces, but in the few threads I have read some people have had issue's with them. Besides, I am running one of Brian's cams and valve springs. I'll talk to him tomorrow and see if something was possibly wrong with my setup, although I have already been through the build with him (which is why he changed the intake lobe). I guess if I pull it apart and it's an intake lifter, I may have deeper issue's.

After what I have been through the past 6 months, your sort of luck is what I could only dream about while i was dropping thousands on unexpected engine and trans problems.

I was about to say that it looks like he is buying you new lifters. But if he is driving a $500 pickup then it doesn't seem as though he would have enough money for lifters. That sucks. I always put my keys in the gun safe when I go out of town and leave the car... Biometeric lock so ONLY I can get in, perhaps you should look into one.

I'm pretty sure people who have not had issues won't post threads about how flawless they are running or how quiet they are.

After 3000 miles, mine are still the quietest I've ever heard, even quieter than my stock motor was. I set the preload at .070 +/- .010.

Yeah, you're right. What PN's did you get? Are the Lunati and Morels the same? Do they use the trays? Appreciate the info man!

The Morels I use (non-link) are very quiet.

Very little pre-load required, just enough to get the plunger off the stop.

Lunati 72437-16 = Morel 5206

I run them at .060-.080 preload. Forgot to mention this preload is with an iron LSX block and aluminum heads.

So I finally was able to get in the shop tonight...took about three hours to get everything apart to find the #1 intake lifter was the culprit.

I did get the opportunity to talk to Brian Tooley about this the following day. He agreed with my initial diagnosis and said the LS7's with .065"-.085" should be just fine, however he said their looser internal tolerances can lead to noise at idle with an aftermarket cam. He said that I can go with an aftermarket lifter such as his SLR's or the Morels to completely eliminate the idle "tick", and that I can go ahead and increase the preload to .100".

I'm going to get Brian's SLR lifters...I figure that any vendor that can take the time out of their busy day to speak with a customer on the phone and share their wisdom is well worth doing business with.

Parts are ordered, hope to get back on the road next week.

You're making me think that I should upgrade to SLR lifters before I sell my motor, but I'm not sure if it'd be worth the effort.
