cc306 cam with 0 supporting mods :o
I thought I'd share this with you guys and listen to your opinions and comments. My brother just rebuilt the LT1 in his '95 z28. Other than the cam, EVERY part on his motor is 100% factory, including the springs. Stupid idea, eh? Don't ask why. I've told him several times about the supporting mods but he doesn't listen to me. Here's the shocking part. He's been using it as a daily driver, running WOT SEVERAL times, putting about 8000 miles on the rebuild and he still hasn't had a single issue with it. How the hell does that happen?

When it goes he will be rebuilding another engine...
Max lift on stock lt1 springs is somewhere around .480? cc306 with 1.5 rockers (if stock) is .510/.540. Worse if he is running 1.6 obviously.
you do the math (just wanted to say that)
It may last another couple hundred miles, or a couple thousand, either way its not going to be anywhere near what a oem mass produced engine will.
Coil bind is good for everything. Id guess his lifters are making up the difference.

on every cam card there is valve spring specs. to bad he ignored that.
if he just gets springs he would be good to go even with stamped 1:5 rockers. tune would help
if he used "new" stock springs that may be why they have not yet completely shiat themselves...although their life expectancy is very short moving forward. if they were his old springs...wow.
he must just be beating the f out of his springs, PR and lifters though

Because 100$ set of springs isnt worth the effects of lifter shrapnel or bent pushrods.
These are the types of cars you want to avoid when they become forsale with a "running issue".

Only a matter of time...
I did something similar when I was younger.
Had an olds 350 with a 284 adv duration cam. I got a lunati 305 adv duration cam for super cheap. Installed it with no other changes. Idle sounded so mean! Test drive, stupid slow off the line, valve float by 4000 rpm. Second time wot I bent 3 pushrods and broke two rocker straps. I was lucky and just swapped the old cam back in. could have dropped/bent a valve or created some holy pistons. I think your brother is on borrowed time.

What is this 'you' ****? Read the post. I said it was my brother's. The cam had to be replaced anyway so that was a have-to but apparently he doesn't understand the 'have to' in supporting mods. But he will one day.

You sure it's not a 305?
I'm not going to judge too harsly. One of my dad's first wrenching experiences was to put a Sig Erson "30/30" cam in his '72 Nova. Dude helping him told him to at least get different springs. He didn't and ended up having to rebuild the motor about a year later.

I read the post, I meant "you" as referring to him. Also, I'd rather take the bus for a month before killing my firebird because I can't afford the right parts. He'll have to afford more later anyways.
