Buy new opti or 24x for 400+rwhp build?
Hey there...just in the process of acquiring parts for a decent 355 rebuild - its going to be a big heads and cam set up. My question is, since a 24x is likely not in the budget, should I buy a new opti to be safe? The car has 100,000 miles on the current opti and no issues. Opti is stock for 1996 TA.
Is the MSD cap rotor a good upgrade?
Lastly, what would the total cost of the 24x conversion be assuming a shop installed. Parts, harness and labour? Assume the engine is out of the vehicle for rebuild. There is still a chance I might spring for it but I have a lot of other priorities on this car.
Thanks

I never used the MSD stuff. The factory cap will run as fast as an MSD. The rotor needs help. I have slung the blade off a couple. Always tears some other **** up inside too. I replaced the two plastic dowels they melted the ends and smeared over to hold the two piece blade in place with a couple of long 1/8" aluminium pop rivets. A Rick Abare fix. Cured that problem. Cost about nothing to do. The Opti you already have is fine. Just fix the rotor.
If you don't need to spin it past 7000 you don't need an LS1 box.

9 years i beat my Lt1 UP!!!! Never an opti problem........
If you have the extra money to spend 1500.00 for the Ls1 pcm conversion go for it. I did mine for the ease of dyno tuning since HARDLY anyone does Lt1/4 stuff by me.
The other advantage besides tuning software, you can program your fans to stay on for a few minutes after you shut the car off, you can use the LPE 2-step, you can rev higher than 7000 providing your bottom end can handle the chore.... you have to decide if that is $$$$$ well spent for you.
I will also go on record the average opti issue is OWNER INDUCED! Cheap replacement parts, poorly installed parts are 90% of the failures.....
