Default Keep A4 or go with t56 m16 out of a gto?

I was wondering would my car be much faster all around if i swapped in a gto t56 with the z06 gear ratios or just kept the auto and upgraded it?

Do you need overdrive? If not buy you a th350 th400 manual valve body with trans break and enjoy wipping the butts of all of those 6m guys at the track...

Sure,
But enjoy gettin about 10mpg with a 3 speed no overdrive....unless you have en extra car to drive everyday, a manual valve body TH400 or TH350 is NOT the way to go for a daily driver, sorry. It would SMOKE some cars making more power than you though from a dig!!!

Depends on what you mean by all around.

I like the f-body/standard vette ratios better than the Z06/GTO ratios.

The f-body gearset with 3.73 gears is about on par with the Z06 gearset with 3.42 until you hit fourth, which has a very big split for the Z06.

Probably cheaper to get the f-body too.

You don't want an automatic from a roll. A 'verter will help, but it will never equal an M6.

Not a daily driver for me...just a weekend warrior... But it is a great investment if you plan on spraying or running FI...you can rebuild a 4l60e to your hearts content and you will keep on breaking it...

So do I I had a 4l60e with a 3600 stall and it was fun as hell. I swapped to a beefed up t-56, McLoed clutch and Moser 12 bolt w/ 4.10's. From experience with both, I can tell you an M6 rules from a roll no doubt. If you're a track guy I would stick with an A4 for sure. Much easier to race, and you break less parts and get quicker e.t's with a less powerful engine for the most part. Just watch out for the M6's on the way home from the track.....

Well, right now I have a LT1 T56 tranny behind my 355 TPI in my '91 GTA and I absolutely love it. I've had 3.42s and 4.10's behind it and its a blast with both but the 4.10's definately get my vote! My sister also own's a '02 WS6 M6 car. I've driven it and I love the LS1/M6/3.42 combo as well, but it could probably use 3.73's or 4.10's. Now I own a brand new '04 M6 GTO and I absolutely love the zo6 tranny in this thing with the 3.46 gears in the rear but the gas mileage just isn't quite as good as my sister's WS6 with the taller gear ratios. I am also currently swapping the 355/T56 combo out of my GTA, and I'm putting a H/C LS1 in it. At first I had an A4 for it with a 3600 vigilante, but I've sinced sold it and I bought a T56 for it from a LS1 fbody. I'm going to run 4.10s or something like that behind it and I think I'll love it. I've ridden in 10 and 11 second LS1/A4 cars and they are a blast with their stalls, but I just love manuals so I went with one. Hopefully after I get a 12bolt/9" along with slicks and a SPEC St III, I'll be pulling 1.6X 60's and be having fun with A4 cars on the street.

*Sorry this was so long, but I've had alot of experience with multiple GM T56s, GM motors, and gear ratios. All in all, go for the T56 if you like driving a stick, you're ready to spend all the money on a good clutch and rearend, and you can drive one well at the track (if you like to race). I love them, and I'm glad I'm sticking with a T56. Whether or not you get a GTO T56 or just a regular fbody T56 is up to you, but you can't go wrong with either one.... just choose your rearend ratio correspondingly... if that makes sense. LOL, that was a mouthful. Good luck!

It's actually very close to 3.90s, not 3.73s in 1-3, 5 and 6. 4th being way off of course. I have 3.90s in my M6 C5 and it's a great setup.

Hmm...

No, I just did the math.

It's almost exactly the same as the f-body ratio with 3.73.

So close, its as if they made it that way on purpose.

It was within a couple hundreths, not even enough to matter.

I have had both on the same car..I misss the consistancy at the track with the A4/TC combo, but I love the M6 on the street.
I guess I have the best of both worlds though, my Girlfriend has a 02 z with an A4/TC combo that she lets me drive now and then

I just typed out all of the equations for like 15 mins then I hit back like an idiot.

Anyway, the 3.90 is closer than 3.73, end of story. There was a bigger gap between M6/3.73 and M12/3.42 than there was M6/3.90 and M12/3.42. I didn't calculate 4th gear because I specifically excluded it in my original post (M12 4th is way off from M6 4th, final drive-wise).

Well, lets try this again:

1st gear:

3.73 x 2.66 = 9.9218

3.90 x 2.66 = 10.374

3.42 x 2.95 = 10.1574

Almost the same distance away there...

2nd gear:

3.73 x 1.78 = 6.6394

3.90 x 1.78 = 6.942

3.42 x 2.07 = 7.0794

3.90 IS closer in 2nd...

3rd gear:

3.73 x 1.30 = 4.849

3.90 x 1.30 = 5.07

3.42 x 1.43 = 4.8906

3.73 is closer there. Obviously not END OF STORY, ya dig?

I'm sure your 3.90's are a good setup. Realisticly, they are so close to 3.73 that you probably wouldn't notice in a race until you got up to super high speeds.

To me, the gap from 3rd to 4th in the Z06 tranny is very noticiable. 6th is almost identical to the Viper T56 (0.50 vs 0.56), so mileage should be similar. However, the Z06 has a much shorter 5th (0.84), so for road racing that works out to work out well by the numbers.
