Default sawpping rear carriers

My buddy is planning on taking a new auburn LSD and swapping his ring gear over from his stock open diff, and then throwing the new carrier and all back into the chunk using the same shims as the stock carrier?

Is he going to blow his **** up?

I don't know enough about rear ends to know, but he thinks that it will be fine, and I don't.

thanks

Most likely it will be fine. As long as the shims are installed back on the correct sides they came from gear pattern should not change much (that's assuming the carrier is machined correctly). It never hurts to check the pattern and the backlash before and after just to verify.
