Default vette fuel filter regulator routing

I was checking fuel pressure and its 65 @ idle and low rpm. But drops to the as low as 42 at WOT as it get to redline. Was wondering if maybe I have feed and return backwards on filter. So I looked up images for routing of filter and found pic of inlet being center and return outer and one that showed inlet outer and return center. Maybe different manufactures are designed different. Anyone have any input.

It only goes on 1 way. The supply inlet is a 3/8 line and the return outlet is a 5/16 line.

The problem is the terribly design. The regulator cannot respond fast enough with it being so far from and before the fuel rails. The only good way to fix this is with converting to a return style fuel system. You can band-aid it by using a pump with a LOT more capacity than you need, but that is still just a band-aid.

Thanks for your reply.
On my car the filter/regulator is about 3 feet from fuel rail. Is that too far?
