Default Is 68 psi cold oil pressure a little on the high side

I've just put an LT1 into my landcruiser I don't know any of its history other than its a 20 year old engine, I've got an autometer mechanical oil pressure gauge and its showing 68 psi on start up which seems a bit high to me, I've got no doubts about the gauge accuracy coz my old gen 1 engine had very little oil pressure and showed it on the gauge. Oil is new and a bit thicker at 15w-40. I haven't got the radiator hooked up so cant run it for long. I've got an LS engine in my other landcruiser running the same oil and only getting about 60 psi on cold start up (also matching autometer mechanical gauge)

thanks for any opinions

I running 5/30 and have 62-65# at cold startup. 22# at hot idle. Why are you running such thick oil?

Mine will peg over the gauge on a cold start, I just wait till coolant temps are up to normal before really getting on it.

I agree with this. Even running 0w40 Mobil One the L31 350 crate engine in my Express runs something like 70 psi on a cold start at idle. On a 90*F day, startup with the engine already idled down to 700 rpm, it holds 60 psi. Fully heat soaked it idles at about 20-25 psi. Running down the road at 2,200 RPM @ 70 it runs 70 psi. My guess is the newer GM 350s have a 70 psi relief spring in them similar to the old Z/28s and LT-1s. On mine the electric gauge is suprisingly accurate when compared with a mechanical gauge.

Thanks for the info guys, I got the radiator in and filled with coolant today and run it up to operating temp and have a hot idle of around 22-25 psi so it all seems normal
