help me diagnose differential noise please!
This is for my sons 02 Camaro. While driving the car there's a moaning noise that sounds almost identical to a wheel bearing noise. I completely disassembled it and found pitting on the carrier bearings. I replaced those along with the axle bearings and I replaced both pinion bearings while I was there. Backlash was a little sloppy till I replaced the carrier bearings but now it's right at. 008. Ring and pinion look to be in good condition but it's still making the same noise! Is the differential itself making noise? (I thought you would only hear that going around turns though)

Those repair bearings have a bad reputation. Is this car an m6? Every ten bolt, even low mileage units, that lived behind a manual transmission have pitted carrier bearings on the drivers side, and most did not make noise. As you can see by you replacing them they were not the source of your noise. Have you tried swapping wheels from front to back, and checking other suspension components while under the car?
