Default Shifter Question

Ok, I'm pretty much going to have to purchase a new shift stick, because the rubber peice at the base of my factory one has worn off so my shifter rotates freely. That's not fun to drive on. I'm debating if I should also buy a new shifter at the same time. I'm trying to learn what the benefits of a new shifter are over a stock Hurst one. Are they more reliable, more sturdy? Are they more accurate in their shifting? Handle more power? I understand a short stick because it means less actual distance to move the handle between throws. There are no plans on my car for serious performance mods. Maybe some stuff to the intake system but that's gonna be it. What are your guys thoughts?
