Default Why is a lower stall better w/ lower gears?

I've been researching this a lot, but have yet to figure out the 'why' part of this. In my little pea brain, it would seem to me that something like.... say my 2.73's would want to run a higher stall than Joe Blo's 3.73's. But it's the other way around. ... I just don't get it.

For pure racing, your logic is correct. The 2.73s need more help than 3.73s. However, drivability is the issue. The 2.73s will be very loose feeling (and require a very big tranny cooler). A 4000 stall on 3.73s is something many (but not all) people can get use to. A 4000 stall on 2.73s will feel like you are dragging a boat anchor behind the car around town in stop-and-go traffic.
