Default 2005 EVO MR

As if the current EVO wasn't enough of a performer, Mitsubishi is upping the ante for 2005.

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is one of the most exciting sports-car experiences in production today. So how do you make a great thing even better?

Enter the Lancer Evolution MR — or, as Senior Editor Kim Wolfkill calls it — the “Evo Version 2.0.”

The MR’s engine is retuned to deliver a few extra bhp, bumping peak horsepower up to 276 and torque to 286 lb.-ft.. And there’s now a close-ratio 6-speed gearbox. On the handling front, the MR’s ride has been smoothed out, compared with the standard Evo, thanks to specially valved Bilstein shocks, without sacrificing performance and grip one bit. Turn-in has been enhanced with the addition of a front helical limited-slip differential and an Active Center Differential (ACD), the latter offering three different settings: Tarmac, Gravel and Snow. An improved braking system dubbed Sport ABS measures a variety of data including steering angle and wheel speed to optimize braking force at each wheel. And speaking of the wheels, the MR gets a new lightweight set by BBS.

Pricing for the enhanced Evo MR has yet to be set but should hover around the $35,000 area — exotic sports-car performance with an entry-level luxury sedan price tag.
