My rear end is noisy as well 2000a4 w/2.73 and I really this mine is back lash. Changed the rear end fluid 3x in 45,000 miles and have not seen ANY metal shavings in all this time, so I just accepted it for now.

If your rear end is whining that is your gears. Your rear is probalby on its last leg. You may want to start saving now for a good rear end.

i am going with a 12 bolt with 4.10's. you should probably be thinking around $2000. then you wont have to worry about it any more

If your gears are stock, and have never been changed then like 2muchrice said, your rear is probably about to kick the bucket. On the other hand, if the gears have been upgraded from 2.73's to your 3.23's then the spacers might be the cause for the problem. I know that my ricmond 3.73's whine, and that is because when I put them in I eyeballed my spacing from the stock gears. Not to mention some aftermaket brands whine even if spaced correctly. If its completely stock I would suggest an entire new posi unit in your rear end. Prices vary from brand to brand, but before you buy anything have your axles checked too. You might just need to rebuild the entire thing, or vote to go get a 9 inch or 12 bolt if you have the money.

Yeah, I said that because his sig says "bone stock" so I assumed that he did not replace the gears.

It really depends on how much power you plan on making. There is alot of options out there. You can either get a 12 bolt or a 9" but there are alot of options you can go with. Try doing a search in the gear section youll find alot of info there on which one will be best for your setup.
