This is something I have been considering so I have done a lot of research. Is it hard? No. Lots of people have done it as well as lots that went from M6 to A4 or A3. A complete swap on one car can be done in about 12 hours. As far as cost goes it depends but here are a few examples.
1). M6 swap kit $2500 + $800 install = $3300. Do the work yourself = $2500.
2). All used and reasonably priced parts from salvage yards, ebay, ect = $1500 + $800 install = $2300. Do the work yourself = $1500.
3). Find M6 guy that wants to swap with you and pay shop/mechanic to do work = $1300 . Do the work yourselves = $0.
Just remember that the PCM needs to be reflashed for a M6 so you may have to pay someone to do that for you if you do the swap yourself. These are just rough estimates so actual prices may very some.
Good Luck.
