WEIRD electrical problem with gauge.... sorry for the long post, but i need some help as im stumped...
i pulled my autometer trans temp. gauge out of the a-pillar to change the backlight color....when it popped out, i accidentally pulled the ground for the backlight off (i had the gauge itself grounded and then i just bridged the ground for the light off the same terminal on the back of the gauge).
i MUST have touched that ground to SOMETHING because now if i hook it back up to the terminal, the gauge PEGS....however, I alligator clipped the light ground to another ground on the car separate from the terminal and the gauge worked fine and lit up...
with the light ground unhooked, the gauge itself still functions so the ground going to the terminal is obviously good....
my multi-tester is showing zero resistance through the light bulb...im thinking SOMEHOW the positive to the light is looping right through (maybe in the socket itself) and feeding 12 volts right into the gauge ground, pegging it.
does this make sense???? I'm LOST as to how it could be ALL F**KED UP with both the light and the gauge grounded to the same terminal but work fine with both drawing ground from separate places.....
any help would be greatly appreciated....
