Default Smog Pump/Air Pump Whine Noise

I have a 98 LS1 and recently noticed a whining noise when the air pump comes on. It does it only after I have driven it, let it set, then start it up again. Took it to the chevy dealer and they indicated that it's within specifications. There's no SES light. Any thoughts? Perhaps it's something else?

quite normal. a search will reveal many threads about this very topic.

the smog pump is activated on cold starts. it's purpose is to inject fresh air into the exhuast system to aid the catalyst in lighting off faster thus reducing harmful emmisions.

thanks. follow up question (sorry for being obtuse). is the sound a sign of something else, perhaps the check values? Where are the check values? Hard to change?
