Post up pinion shim size

What gear are you changing from? If you had a 3.23 or higher the case is the same. As far as the shim goes, every housing is different. What you should do is measure the thickness of your old pinion, then the new one, and make up the difference using the old shim. Most of the variance is in the housing, so you cant really base it off of somebody elses install, your old shim would be closer.
For backlash go .010-.012

start off using the shim that came off your old pinion and go from there. 9 times out of 10 that puts you right on the money.

POSTING FOR KRYCKTER
We started out with a .032 shim, the car howled like a wolf.
I spent the day changing shims
Pattern with a 32 Good coast, bad drive near the toe
.024 good drive ,bad coast near toe
.26 ok drive coast coming up toward the middle from toe
.27 ok drive, coast same as .026
.29 ok drive in the middle, ok coast closest to the middle out of all , still keeping drive ok
We put the .29 in with .008 back lash and it still whines, not as loud as the 32 shim(NOTE 32 shim micked to .030)
We are think about putting a .027 in even though the pattern was not so good??
The 4.10 pinion gear was a tinny bit smaller than the 3.42 pinion gear, (as posted above) can i just measure the old gear and the new one and add the differance to the shim?????

What was the original shim? If the new pinion is smaller, then add the difference to the old shim. You shouldnt be more than a few thousandths off. Also, if your backlash is way out of range it will cause a noise, if you are within a .002 it wouldnt be noticeable, but you should set it at .008-012, I like .010-.012. New gears that are made with a 3 cut process will not show the oval pattern that people are used to. It will kind of slant across the tooth, the main thing is to keep it centered heel to toe.

Stock shim is .032 but is micked out at .030.. backlash is at .008 like stamped on the gears.
I called Richmond today and teh tech guy said that 9 out of 10 gm 10bolts are higher shims with the 4.10's he said around 32-42??
So i borke down today and bought a pinion gear depth checker from summit. $100.0
So well see what kind of ballpark this puts me in
Thanks for the help, your info is helpful

Richmond, that is problem no 1.
JK- I have seen plenty of Richmonds run quiet, but have seen plenty that didnt. If you look at the gears you can kind of see where they were lapped in, idealy you want to be in that same area.
Good luck.
