Default How many people broke their 10bolt on the STREET?

To all the people with their stock 10 bolt averaging 400-450rwhp, with aftermarket gears, who has broken their rearend on the streets, who hasn't seen much track time? I plan on going to the track once, and the car is strictly a street car. I am still debating with myself if it's worth shelling out $2,500 on a rearend. I don't plan on anything stickier than Nitto tires.

P.S. Sorry if these seems a repetive question but it seems that the people that break their rearends are the people who go to the track a lot. I want opinions of people who hardly ever go to the track

Well I plan on having the nittos and keeping them aside, only using them when I know I'll be racing someone one night, and using crappy street tires normally.

Thanks alot man! I don't know how I missed that. It seems pretty 50/50. I think I may just start saving up for a 12bolt, and see how long my 10bolt lasts.

my 10 bolt blew on 245/50/r16 street tires, and this car has never been to the track. this was with a 3.08 gear that was put in the car before i bought it.

i would start saving and order it, you dont want to be out of a car. if you have the money stitting around, and wouldnt be screwed if you were out of a car, you can just run the 10 bolt untill it blows, if it blows at all. i probably only have 320-330 rwhp or somthing an mine broke 8 of the 13 teeth off of the pinion. you will feel much better with a bigger rear end in it, plus you can get it with 4.11's like me

Not to steal the post, but is surge/slippage seem like a pinion issue? I believe my 10bolt is beginning to show signs of giving. Not always a smooth ride, and occurs in all gears.

Ok, I am gonna start saving for the 12bolt, you think it's a good idea to throw in the richmond 3.73 gears I just bought into the 10bolt? Or just sell them? I'll be running the TR224.

The sooner the better. You may blow money on a tow that could be applied to the purchase of the 12 bolt.

Freaky-sell the 3.73's outright and run the gears with the 12 bolt. I'm H/C/Bolt Ons and run a 4.10.

Love it.

I have the TR224 Cam and broke my posi on a turn when I dumped it. Now whenever I turn the car jumps like crazy. Will be buying a 12 bolt or 9" very soon.

I blew up mine on the street with a few bolt ons, 2200 stall and a fully built trans.

Purely 50/50 chance.

Reading all these broken stories is starting to scare me. I just did all these mods to get to 400rwhp and now I'm broke. If my rear breaks I'm screwed. Better start saving for the 12bolt.

My 10-bolt went bye bye. On 275/35 18 Kumho's never seen the drag strip. Never once done a doughnut or smokey burnout. All my bearings were gone and my differential had a 1/4in of play side to side. With mods below. In other words get a 12-bolt.

Definately a "must mod" to do...I just had the worst feelings when I thought of lauching at a decent RPM on ET's in my most bolt-on/cammed/sprayed TA...now I feel good about heading out to the track...

I most definately am loving the 3:73 gearing in the 12-bolt...it's got rid of the low RPM bog that I always experienced with the 3:42's...

So how many of you have broken a 10bolt with less than 400hp after having the rear setup by a pro rather than off the factory line? running no slicks and mostly street useage

I had an '86 Z 305 H.O. 5 speed, with 4.10 gears, an Auburn posi, and Strange axles. Blew apart without ever being down the track, and it never had anything but BFG Radial T/As. 10 bolts blow.
