Default Noisy stock rearend?

My friend is looking at buying a 99 SS w/ 71K miles and the car is perfect except for a noisy rearend. Anyone have this problem? The local dealership told the seller of the car it's nothing to worry about. It gets louder w/ speed. Could it be bearings? Pinion not set up right?

Thanks,

Jason

If the pinion seal is dry, it's got bad carrier bearings.

Could be either one, i'd check the fluids ofcourse, but i'd think the dealer would have already done that, and if it was low just filled it up

The rear end is on its way out. This is a common problem on these cars. You can plan on a $2k 12bolt or 9" rear end in the future or look around at other cars.
