Best $$ per pound weight savings mod
Well after having taken care of almost all free weight drop mods, what are my options as far as dollar per pound weight savings.
I'm at 3280 with half tank of gas, cd's in the car and spare and jack still in without me in the car (basically daily driver mode).
So far it looks like the van overbeek carbon fiber hood is winning at a little over 10 bucks per pound. What do you guys suggest as my first money weight saving mod.
Nate

no glass hatch or speed glass as speed glass isn't d.o.t. approved. So here is what im looking at
Hood (cf) $440 (maybe 35-40 lbs)
k-member $500 (maybe 30 lbs if chromoly)
lightweight carpet $220 (about 15-17 lbs)
upper a-arms $200 (only about 7-8 lbs
lowers $399 (probably only about 5 lbs)
lcas $220 (6 lbs)
lightweight batt $120 (10-12 lbs)
solid motor mounts $125 (5 lbs)
and a bunch others i cant think of right now

VFN makes the hatch. Percys makes the speedglass. You wont save 35 pounds with a CF hood. Stock hood isnt more then 40. IIRC mine was 38 pounds minus the hardware.
Upper A arms are actually usually heavier then stock, definetly not lighter. Lightweight carpet would save you closer to 30 pounds.

Well as far as the hood, VFN Fiberglass about 22lbs, saving over a Non SS/WS6 hood is about 30lbs from what I have read. The stock steel hoods are approx. 52-55lbs, I agree it doesnt feel like it when hooked up on struts, but after taking mine off I wouldnt think 52lbs is that far off. ($450 hood saving 30lbs = $15/lb) The weight is also coming off the front, only thing better is undsprung weight.
Nate, I seen you post above a CF hood for $440, where is that from? I was looking at the same design as the 4th Gen Sunoco and it was around $1200, weighing in at 5.5-7lbs.

I didn't see rims on your list. For racing, the best weight reduction is unsprung weight (weight not held by the car's springs). 1 lbs of unsprung weight is the equivalent of reducing sprung weight by 6-8 lbs. Getting a set of lightweight drag rims will net the biggest bang for your buck.

may also want to give the lightweight battery a little more thought........I saved 28lbs off the front of the car with a lightweight battery over the optima redtop that i was running

Don’t forget you have to paint the hood. Add $200 to the cost. I was disappointed with the cost of weight savings when I did my hood.
Light weight carpet from Home Depot is a great bang for the dollar mod. You can spend $40 and save ~30 pounds.

I didn't want to pay $700 and up for a hood and my brother has a glass business. But the big reason was to get a functional scoop and box that would mate with the MAF (or TB) and hold a filter to keep the rocks out. If it looks good we will make a few and take them with us to the race at BG.

Thats some serious weight savings...
With as light as some of our cars are and then another 100lbs of savings from the rear of the car, how the heck are we supposed to hook the damn car with no weight over the tires.

From talking to the Van Overbeek crew they have a cf hood and it only runs around 440 or so (maybe my mind fails me) I'll find a link for ya.
As far as rims and tires go, i don't have a ton of cash laying around right now nor do i have a 9" or 12 bolt, and the hood is probably the highest i could get away with for now. I don't care if i only drop 5-10 lbs as long as it's the most economical way to drop the weight first.
I just ordered my rear lcas though. The billingsley double rod ended chromoly ones so hopefully that should help out another 5 lbs or so.
