Default What rods do you use to weld chromoly?

With TIG welding a chromoly roll cage, what kind of rods do you use? In other words what are the specs on the rods to be used when welding? Are there any special techniques in welding chromoly. I have heard that you are supposed to pre-heat chromoly and then weld to it. Can anyone help me?

4130 to 4130 you can get away with an ER70S-2 filler, but it's more for mild to mild and mild to 4130.

preferably you should use an ER80S-D2 filler when doing 4130 to 4130 or 4130 to mild.

I've used both without problem, but have since started using 80S only once I found a local source.

Nothing special about the welds, good surface prep is always a must

unless you plan to weld something 1/2"+ thick, just start welding

4130 tube is already normalized when you get it, all you'll do is get it warm
