can i buy any torque converter for the th400 and have it work on my ls1 or do i have to buy one that is specifically designed to work with an ls1?

I used an SBC converter when I changed to a TH400. You will need a pilot spacer for the crankshaft, spacer/washers for the flexplate to converter lugs, as well as either a TCI or 1998 Flexplate (with the dual LS1 and SBC converter bolt pattern). Other companies also make LS1-TH400 specific converter at a higher cost than SBC converters.

i went on summit to buy a flexplate but i noticed that the tci converters need and 168 tooth flexplate but the ones for the ls1 arent 168 tooth. i can get one for a 5.7 but for years 94 and below. That flexplate should work with the 400 right?

What size converter are you getting that requires a 168 tooth flexplate? LS1s and SBC both have 153 tooth flexplates, but the crankshaft bolt pattern is different from the LSx style engines and the SBC engines. I run an 8" converter on my 1998 Z28 with a 153 tooth flexplate, you should be good with either a TCI or 1998 flexplate.
