I was wondering if anyone has used something other than atf for gear lube. I know that chevrolet has used a synthetic lube in '89 pickup 5 speeds, and was wondering if that would make the trans live longer, and still shift good.
Maybe this trans does live long with atf.
Anyone have over 150,000 miles on one without any big problems?
Just wondering.

Those pick up boxes have low-tech/ old school brass blocker ring synchros and the oil is thicker. F cars have higher performance materials that are designed to shift quicker/ produce less drag with ATF. Don't re-engineer your trans with a mystry oil to find out you've destroyed the synchronizers.

Yep, I'll second that. I've tried the factory fill {dexIII I reckon], Mobil 1 Synthetic AFT {didn't like it} and finally the GM Syncromesh. Changed to the Syncromesh after about 10K miles, 4 years, 40K miles and something like 200 odd 1/4 mile passes later, the tranny is fine. Syncromesh is a bit notchy when cold but I do like it better that the Dextron.
