Gear oil loaded with metallic filings?

Gear oil loaded with metallic filings? I've got a Strange 9" that has about 600 miles on it and decided to change the differential fluid. It was loaded with filings, is this cause for concern? There has been a whine in the unit since the install. Strange has been a PIA over the whine. Comments?
