Well if you mean you have a 2.73, you have a 2 series carrier.
You need to get a 3 series carrier or a ring gear spacer. IMO the carrier would be a better stronger route. You would also be wise to replace your pinion & carrier bearings if you have alot of miles on there. I would replace pinion bearings/races no mater what. A solid or new OE crush sleeve as well.
For tools you gonna need a pinion depth gauge, a hydraulic press, a bearing splitter, a dail indicator, race driver set & some misc shims.
Also a yoke holding tool or big pipe wrench to hold the yoke to torque the pinion nut. That is what you need to do it the right way.
