Shifts into 1st instead of 3rd!

Shifts into 1st instead of 3rd! When I am racing and at the end of second gear, for some reason my car will go into first gear instead of third. It revs up really high, smokes, and the traction control light comes on. Keep in mind that it's going into first gear at around 6X mph. How can I stop this? I dont want to mess anything up. This has happened two times in this car, but never in any other car of mine. BTW, I am running the stock hurst shifter w/ a short stick.
