Default can you change front main seal w/o removing timing cover

did a cam swap for a buddy today and he didnt get a new front main seal so we reused the one he had.

needless to say we button it up and it has a very slow oil leak out of it only when its running

so we need to change the front main seal, can you do it without removing the timing cover, cause i would really like to avoid draining the radiator and taking off the water pump again if possible

if u reused the old one im sure it will come right out, just take the pulley off and get at it with a really tiny flat head

everytime ive done a swap like this (like 10-12) i always put the new seal in than loosely screw in all the bolts to the timing cover when installing it and install the pulley so the pulley is centered in the seal, than i tighten all the bolts to the cover. this has always helped avoid leaks like this

if i just yank the old seal out and put in the new one i wont be able to do this. do you think this will be a problem??

be EXTREMELY CAREFUL when installing the new seal. That ALUMINUM cover is very thin! Without support from behind, you run a good chance of tweaking the cover or breaking the retainer lip on the inside of the cover.

that seal is not pressed in hard at all. you could probably thread a self tapping screw into the seal to pull it out if you are worried
