Question 2.73 to 3.42 Swap Help

Someone educate me please.

I bought a set of 3.42's but just got a phone call that they won't work in my diff because I need a "wide ring gear" sicne I had a 2.73's origionally.

Is this the difference between a 2 series carrier and a 3 series carrier?

I'm getting annoyed by all this because I went to Vans a week ago to buy everything and they sold me 3 pinon seals claiming 2 of them were axle seals.

I was told that I should call "Donna @ B&B" and ask for a "wide ring gear set for a 7.5" because that would be cheaper than getting a new carrier.

I really need to find whatever it is I need so the car can be done for the Sunshine Kids event on Weds. Anyone think Austin Drivetrain would have in stock what I need?

They are correct. The 2 Series Differential is used for the 2.73's. In order to use a 3.42 gear set, you need either a 2 Series 3.42 or buy a 3 Series Differential. It would be cheaper to buy the 2 Series 3.42 made by Strange Engineering. The 3 Series Differential was cost ~$100 and that would be used. A new 3 Series Differential will be ~$450. With the installation of new gears, buy the master installation kit and the rear end will be good as new. There are ~$129 and includes all of the seals, bearings, shims, and gaskets. Whatever you do, do not buy Richmond Gears. They are loud as hell.

Thanks for the help.

From the information you gave me it helped me to do some research and found out that the largest you could go in a factory gear for a series 2 carrier was 3.08.

Strange makes their "X gear set" and Richmond makes a "Wide Gear set" for series 2 carriers.

I found a place called Peyton Performance that had a the gears in stock and could have them here tomorrow for $204. I should still be able to make the Sunshine Kids Cruise to the Capitol on Weds.

Obviously I'll be listing a series 3 - 3.42 gear set and a series 2 - 2.73 gear set for sale soon.

The wide gears are a tad more expensive, but not like buying a new differential.
