I just ran into this problem the other night, 1st the spline must be lined up. 2nd did you use the aglinment tool to line up the disc dead perfect to the pilot bearing. 3rd look to see if the throw out bearing is touching the fingers on the pp. That was my case and I had to get another person with me and we wrestled it in there and got the bolts started.
Its one of the three or all three.

2",s sounds like yor disc is not ined up. Did you use the tool? Make sure you can easly slide it back and forth all the way when the pp is torqued and you should be fine.

I agree with 618hawk your gonna have to pull the tranny away from the clutch assembly to see if a pilot tool will slide in there. You might of moved the the disc in the clutch from wrestling around with it so much. Just keep trying when its right it'll slide right in there when it all lined up .

Just be patient get your angle right and stab it in, shake it around a little and itll go in assuming you used the alignment tool, once it gets close enough you can pull it in with the bolts just make sure you do 4 bolts around the perimiter and turn them all the same amount to pull it in to avoid binding.
