Default 4L80E guys - what size gears & tires are you running?

What size gears and tires are you running on your 4L80E cars/trucks? I know 1st gear looks a little high and OD a little lower than the 4L60E. Trying to decide if I want to stay with the 2.88 gears or start going deeper with a 3.07 or 3.31. Tire size is 205/70R15 (but will get wider tires at same height when finished) Is 1st gear really that slow, and is OD okay on gas mileage?

I bought a 4L80E trans for my 1985 Jaguar XJ6 project car... finished weight should be around 3800lbs pushing around 625rwhp and 550ft/lbs of torque at the rear wheels. Right now it looks like the widest wheel I will be able to get on the back will be a 9.5" alloy. This is a street car only on street tires, not a track car.

FastKat,

I am running a 3.73 posi rear with mine. First through fourth in the 80E are:

2.43, 1.39, 1.00, 0.75

Top speed for my Malibu should be right around 155.

How are you controlling your 4L80E?

Gear ratio numbers I've seen published for the 80E are:
(1st through 4th)
2.48, 1.48, 1.00, .75, Reverse is 2.08 (coincidentally, the same as the TH400 ratios)

The 700R4 / 60E gear ratios are:
3.06, 1.62, 1.00, .696, Reverse is 2.29

There is an aftermarket lower gear set for the 80E. Available from a couple of vendors. I'm sure it requires fully rebuilding the trans, have 0 idea of how it affects durability. Ratios are:
2.75, 1.57, 1.00, .75, Don't know reverse ratio.

Jim,

The only gear ratios I was able to find were the ones listed below by Dreamin. I also saw the aftermarket gears he was talking about but am not willing to do a full rebuild just yet! What year is yours? I hear they changed it in 1997.

Are you happy with your gear setup? Pros/Cons?

Also, I am going to control mine with the factory computer. I bought a 2003 2500 cargo van with a 6.0L engine and the factory computer controls the 4L80E... no aftermarket stuff for me! Hopefully the computer will take a tune though... if not, I could prob swap it for a 2500 truck computer if they're different.

Do you run a 4L80E? If so, what do you think? Good choice or bad?

Don't have one yet.....

Sadly, still in the planning phase, haven't gotten to the actual building phase.

I'm doing the research for a 6.0l LSx v8 swap into a 1998 - 2000 4 door S10 Blazer (or Jimmy or Bravada depending upon what I can find for good $$$ with the options that I want). Trans will be an 80E, will be running AWD. Ultimate plans call for a single turbo (probably a T76). My stock gear choices for those year trucks are either 3.42's or 3.73's. I am going to start with 3.42's, with a 285 40 18 tire (at all 4 corners, which may take some real doing and rework of the fenders). That seems like it would be the best compromise of off the line acceleration with decent cruising speeds in 4th gear. Cruise rpm @ 65 mph should be about 2150 rpm. May swap to 3.23's to drop cruise rpm to around 2000 rpm @ 65 mph, or maybe even 3.08's, if I find that cruise rpm is to high, but I've got to change gears in both fronts & rears, so its not a decision I'll make lightly.

Basically, I threw the gear ratios together in an excel spreadsheet to figure out what my rpms / speeds would be for different gear ratios & tire sizes. I'd suggest you do something similar. Most tire manufacturers list the revolutions per mile for their tires (which makes the calculations alot easier).

I'm choosing an 80E because I've heard way too many people blowing up well built 700R4's / 60E's. Especially the Syclone & Typhoon guys, who are close to what my ultimate goals are (weight, drivetrain layout, power output). Seems that AWD is incredibly hard on transmissions. And I'd rather do the engine / transmission swap once (with the potential for driveshaft length changes) than have to do it 2x. But that's just me.

Yea, I already did the calculations... I just don't have a really good adea about what the feel of the vehicle would be like on the highway at those different RPM's, gears, etc....

I have a 6.0L truck engine for sale that's still in the truck... 2003 2500 cargo van w/only 39k miles... PM me if you're interested. I'm just outside the DC area in Northern VA.

Thanks! -Dave
