Default series 2 vs series 3

do you have to, not should you, but do you have to have a series 3 carrier to use stock, gm, 3.42 gears? i need to know before i try putting gm 3.42s in my 2.73 stock rear end.

if you put gm 3.42 gears in your series 2 carrier, you need to use a ring gear spacer

i need to use a ring gear spacer in order to have it work at all? or just in order to keep them quiet? or what?

You need the spacer to get it to work.

don't even bother, just get the right gears, if they make what's called "thick" 3.42's I dont know if they do, but I know i made the same mistake with mine and got standard 3.73's when I need to the thick 3.73's to make it work in my 2.73 rear end.
