how to explain my cam (excuse for parents)?

Just tell them the truth, as long as its your money, they shouldn't care. I use to be in the same situation as you are 9 years ago, trying to hide all my performance parts from my parents. My dad found my nitrous bottle in my mustang 3 years after it had been installed, and he didn't really care after finding it. As long as I wasn't spending his money on stupid car stuff, he didn't give a damn. After that, he even had me install some performance parts on his truck.

lol, tell em you switched mufflers and that the lope has always been there and that the new muffler is why you can hear it now. and the shaking is because the new mufflers made your fuel curves go a little wacky during idle, but that its pefectly normal for your situation, and absolutely nothing to worry about.
or
try the sarcastic excuse.
"well mom, i took it to the local tuner and they dropped a 500 cubic inch big block in it and i now have a thousand horsepower and do a burnout at every stop! What do you think!?"
mom "well, whatever, i dont need your lip"
Dad "dont treat us like we're stupid. I wasnt born yesterday"
You "well, why do you treat me like a hoodlum, a little bit of sound isn't killing anyone! Not to mention, i finally found the tone i want"
dad "what did you change on it then?"
you "i told you, i got a big block with a thousand hp"
dad "whatever, just dont ask for money when you brake something"
you "dont worry."
works almost everytime!

Take off all of the air intake components except the throttle body, cover the TB opening with a sock (fake them out with the ricer standard operating procedure).
Then when they ask about the change in sound just open the hood up and show them how with a minor adjustment the car runs better.
Afterwards take the sock off and replace the air filter and intake components.
Problem Solved!!!

yeah, i'm still thinking about what i'm gonna tell them. I think the besty thing to do is to tell them i have a bad rocker/pushrod and that it is a real bitch to change it. (tell them I need to pull the heads to do that) I'll tell them i'll fix it during the winter whenI take my insurance off. (when in reallity that is hello AFR 205's and 90/90).

How do the kids these day afford 205s and a 90/90 combo? Good grief son, do your thing.
Secondly, the truth is always the best. Saves alot of headaches in the long run. If they ask what a cam does, it makes the car run better and sound better. Bottom line.
