Do catalytic converters on our cars typically rattle?
I get an annoying loose rattle as I let the RPMs drop in 1st when letting out the clutch. Underneath the car everything is tight and the heat shields seem fine. If I pound on the cats with my hand I hear a rattle. Its hard to tell but it sounds like loose washers on an untightened bolt but everything is tight. I put some RTV on each O2 collar to make sure they do not rattle but that doesn't fix it. Can the cores of the cats be loose?

Well, I haven't experienced the rattle on my LS1 car, but I did on my '80 Trans Am with 455 power. Had cats on it and the timing was off - too lean. Likely burned the **** out of the inside of the cats. Well, they would rattle at idle up through about 3000 rpm. Got them replaced and no more problems.

Sounds like broken catalyst in your cats. Get them replaced. I dont recall what the required warranty is on these older OBDII cars, but newer cars have a mandatory 8 year factory warranty for the catalyst system.... try the dealership first to see if it is under warranty... if not... just cut those dudes out and stick in ano2 sims

The heat shields are all good, I checked them thoroughly.
How hard is it to pull the Y-pipe off on a 2001 SS? I want to take a look inside. Do I need any gaskets?
