Pull the tranny dipstick smell it does it smell burnt, see if there is any rust looking dust on the dipstick (burnt clutches). Drive it and see how smooth the shifts are. Kick it down a couple times and make sure those are smooth. Notice at what RPM it shifts and if they are consitent or does the tach jump up in between gears. If the car is stock I'd be surprised if there is much to worry about, but those are the things I would look at.

Obviously check for any slippage in the tranny, if you have to goose it to get it to go, that's bad. Doubt that will be the case, but in case you didn't know it's not normal. Should have good throttle response, shouldn't act like it's "spooling up."
