Default GMPP Chain Dampener

Did a search on this, but the jury seems to be out. Is it worth anything (I have the JWIS chain)? Does it add to any noise (don't want to set of the knock sensors)?

Works for me, no problem with the knock sensors.

I assume you have to drill and tap to use the GMPP chain dampener? Anyone know the part number?

All of the blocks I have seen have had the provisions for the dampner. There should be no reason to drill and tap. www.SDPC2000.com has the chain and dampner. The dampner alone is about $130.

Does it fit with the JWIS/Rollmaster dual-row chain?

I'm sure it would work with diffrent chains, but it was designed around the C5-R/JWIS single chain.

It's primary purpose is to get in the way if the chain catches a natural frequency that causes it to whip around. That little piece of plastic should be enough of a disruption to break the frequency and allow the chain to return to normal operation.

Makes sense. Does anyone know if it fits okay with the JWIS dual chain?

The picture that I posted above is with a Crane Dual chain. It fits, the chain is wider than the plastic.

I ordered it today from Thunder Racing, the only one I called that had it in stock. I really want to finish the car by the weekend. Tomorrow is setting up the Crane rockers so that should take a while then hopefully the dampener will arrived Wednesday so I can start buttoning things back up again

I broke not one, but TWO timing chains when they got caught between the upper sprocket and the block - right around 9 o'clock on the cam sprocket when facing it.

Mind you, this was TWO DIFFERENT cams, blocks sets of heads, etc. - two totally different engines in my 99SS. one of these was a hex-a-just, The second an LS-2. Both breakages were on partially lifted throttle (~70%) above 4500 rpm lazily upshifting after a 5-4 downshift 95% throttle passing maneuver. I released the clutch while easing back into... nothing. DOH!!!

You want to talk about aggravation?

Only earlier blocks were tapped. my 98 has the holes. My 99, and two 01s do not. I tapped one of the 01s for the dampener yesterday, and when I get my heads back from having those five valves replaced this week (c'mon, Eric!!) we'll finally be behind some horses again. I have just about killed my beater in the interim.

My recommendation: If you have an M6, spend it!!!!

If you have a newer block with all equal length head bolts, there is a different part for the damper. It was installed from the factory starting w/ the newer 5.7L's and all the LS2's.

It's also ALOT cheaper for the new style

chain dampner GM PART # 88958607,
nice part, expensive for a plastic part but here is what THE BOOK sas to say:

Was originally designed for the production LS1/6 engine but didnīt make the bean counters.
It works very well to minimize the chain activity/movement in high RPM aplicc.

The original was a stamped steel part with a plastic snap on liner. The next version is spring loaded for more noise reduction.

What all does that require you to take off in order to install it. Im going bigger with the cam soon and wanted to know if I would have to go out of the way of pulling the oil pump off.
