Have you done any work on the engine to get grease or oil or any chemical on it, the engine will burn it off so that could be the burning smell. Also is anything touching your headers?

I had the a similiar problem but it wasn't limited to just the driver side. It ended up I ran over a plastic bag and it got stuck on the passenger side header. It melted to the header and no matter how hard I tried to get it off it still stunk for several months.
Good luck finding the problem. Does it smell electrical?

I had the same problem when my turbo started leaking transmission fluid, but that will happen when you have an 80mm on a 2.0 : \
did you get new painted headers? sometimes they burn off the paint for a while

I have had the same problem for the last month! Can't decide whether it was brake smell or coolant related. All fluid levels have consistantly stayed the same, although by brake fluid looks dark grey/black!
My brake booster seal just started leaking air as well.
