I'm partial to the 1st Iroc, looks pretty much stock, that way you don't have to deal with the potential dumbass installing something they shouldn't be.
Irocs are some of the best handling cars you'll find, and should provide alot of driving fun, especially if you start modding, they can get into the 11's tho it'll take more to get one of those in the 11's than an LS1
Insurance should be cheaper, considering they had like 245 hp stock, and you have some family sedans with that much nowadays

Ugh, I am NOT a fan of the 3rd gens, they remind me of the late 80's early 90's when my sister owned one and slammed my leg in the door of the car.. yeowch.
Get a V6 98-02 fbody or camaro, don't know how much insurance is on those but...
Why does your car have to run 12's and beat other high school kids cars? Hell I was happy to HAVE a car when I was in high school.
Oh and Auto = ownage when you install a stall Not as fun as banging through the gears, but it can haul *** and you won't need any excuses about missing a gear.

Go visit www.thirdgen.org for what you need to run 12s ,11s whatever you wish That's the LS1 tech of the 3rd gen world
If you didn't already know about it
And an auto isn't bad for drag racing, usually much more consistant, if you have your heart set on a manual be advised you could only get a manual with a 305, the only way to get a manual with the 350 is to swap it yourself (BTW swapping the T5 5 speed onto a 350 is not advised, as the 350 will easily shred it, even in stock form)

if you have the money i dont see why you dont commit to a 4th gen ls1 and just keep it for a long time. in the long run it will save you money. just dont feel guilty for getting a nice car if you have the money, you dont have to buy something with over 100k miles but its your decision so do what you like.

I was in your same place when I was 16. I was looking at buying a bone cheap lt1 with what money I had. Boy am I glad I waited to get a car in much better condition and that is a hell of alot faster.(I'm 19 now). If I was you I'd get a nice little beater car for now. Good gas mileage, cheap insurance and its a hell of alot harder to do dumb **** that most are likely to do with 16 year olds do w/ a fast car. Then when ya got the money get an Ls1 and keep your beater. That way you can shove a huge cam and all that fun stuff in the camaro.
Just my 2 cents

no no no im not saying rice. Hell no thats a waste of money. Honda's are fine just dont rice em out. If ya do you waste all of your money so you cant get a LS1 and are still stuck with a slow lame car
When i say beater the first things that come to my mind are civic, cavalier, grand am. Something small, cheap, good on gas. Something like that, that you can get a good deal on

My friend just picked up a 1991 Civic LX for $1,500. Her insurance is going to be dirt cheap, and that thing will run forever. I went with her to check it out, since she knows nothing about cars, and got to talk to the owner a bit... he didn't take the best care of it, but wasn't negligent either, and even without perfect care it was rock solid. That thing will run forever, and get huge gas mileage doing it. I'm with Igobraves on this one... get something like that, and save your money for your dream car... don't compromise and get something in the middle that you'll be stuck with for a while. A $1,500 beater will only set you back four months or so at a decent job, and after that you're just getting closer and closer to your LS1 or better!
Of course, I'm a spoiled bastard, so it's easy for me to talk about not compromising... the most important thing is to take the route that makes you happy. IROCs ARE pretty fun, after all....
