Cone filters instead of a lid?
I'm trying to beef up my intake tract and am thinking about my air filter assembly now. Basically everything on the intake side of things is going to be or is already 90mm. The only thing left is the lid/airfilter. I think it's kind of dumb to have an everything be 90+mm and then have a 75mm or whatever sized lid. Add to the fact it's always bugged my all the air that feeds my precious engine comes in from a little slit the size of a pamplet located above the radiator support.
Instead of selling my lid and buying a TSP 85mm one, I was thinking of using a cone type filter(s) such as this as this, and deleting the lid altogether. Does anyone have any experience with this, how well it works, if it's worth it, etc?
I remember a member here did a dual cone setup not too long ago, but the serach is bunk now and I can't find them.

Check out the K+N FIPK, that'll keep you from having to custom fab some stuff. FWIW, I think I remember what you're talking about, and that guy got flamed big time for using plumbers tube and dryer hose.

http://www.lmperformance.com/741/1.html thats for the slp part that fits in the bottom of your air box after you cut part of it out, you can then get the austin ssra to make it ram air but from under the car.. i had the k&n fipk on my 99 ta, not ram air, and i liked it but its still pulling the air from that little spot above the radiator.. i dont think you could get a traditional cone filter to fit but their are cai kits that use cone filters rather than the drop in... http://www.lmperformance.com/2386/1.html .. the k&n fipk is $300+..

ok, so the Volant looks basically like what I'm trying to do, but how big is the output tube? It only says it's bigger, but not how big. If it's ~90mm I'll just skip the custom fab work and buy it.

the Volant fits the stock maf, so if you have a 85mm maf, you'll need a coupler (like the one that comes with the SLP 85mm maf) in order to get it to fit. Otherwise, your only other choices are as you've mentioned: 85mm lid, or go custom.

As to my original question, I was asking because it seems like such an obvious solution, yet I have never seen anyone with anything like it. I wondered if perhaps there were clearance issues with the hood or the filter drew in too much hot air, etc.
