Even if you buy a used one, you still have to re-flash it with a Tech2 at a dealer regardless. Otherwise it won't work. For those dealers that complain about programming it, all they're doing is getting VIN and serial #'s to match, set the Crank position sensor and set idle.

So you could pull up with your car the way it is, pop out the PCM you have in their now, put in the one you buy, have them initialize it, pop it back out, and put your stock PCM back in to drive until you program the new one with LS1edit (or other program)

Not all GM dealers are the same.

I have a 98 TA. Do to an old file version in my very early model 98 PCM, LS1 Edit would not recognize the PCM.

I took the car to the dealer here in Huntsville, AL and had it flashed with the latest version.

I told them why I needed a reflash and let them know I had installed a cam, headers, heads, LS6 intake and that the rear O2 sensors, EGR, and AIR system were all removed. They downloaded the latest 98 version, loaded into my PCM with the Tech 2, charged me $54.95 for this reflash and sent me on my way.

Now the PCM will go to Thunder Racing for LS1 Edit programming. Hope this "Mail Order" tuning works out for me <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

Here, this is all they need to do.

</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">quote:</font><hr /><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">PCM Replacement/Programming
Service of the PCM should normally consist of either replacement of the PCM or EEPROM programming. If the diagnostic procedures call for the PCM to be replaced, the PCM should be inspected first to see if it is the correct part. If it is, remove the faulty PCM and install the new service PCM.

THE SERVICE PCM EEPROM WILL NOT BE PROGRAMMED. DTCs P0601 and P0602 indicate the EEPROM is not programmed or has malfunctioned.

Important:
The following must be perform anytime the PCM is replaced:

Programming of the EEPROM
The Idle Learn Procedure
The CKP System Variation Learn Procedure
The Engine Oil Life Monitor Reset Procedure
The Functional Check
The following must be perform anytime the PCM is disconnected or looses power:

The Idle Learn Procedure
The Functional Check

Notice
Turn the ignition OFF when installing or removing the PCM connectors and disconnecting or reconnecting the power to the PCM (battery cable, PCM pigtail, PCM fuse, jumper cables, etc.) in order to prevent internal PCM damage.

Important
Ensure that the hood is free of contaminates (moisture) before servicing the PCM. The moisture flows into the PCM connector body when the PCM is disconnected and the hood is opened.

Removal Procedure

Important
Remove any debris from the PCM connector surfaces before servicing the PCM. Inspect the PCM module connector gaskets when diagnosing/replacing the PCM. Ensure that the gaskets are installed correctly. The gaskets prevent contaminate intrusion into the PCM.

Notice
Do not touch the connector pins or soldered components on the circuit board in order to prevent possible electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage to the PCM.

Notice
In order to prevent internal damage to the PCM, the ignition must be OFF when disconnecting or reconnecting the PCM connector.

1) Disconnect the PCM connectors.

2) Remove the mounting fasteners from the PCM bracket.

3) Remove the PCM and mounting bracket assembly from the engine compartment.
4) Remove the PCM from the mounting bracket.

Installation Procedure

Notice
Do not touch the connector pins or soldered components on the circuit board in order to prevent possible electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage to the PCM.

Notice
In order to prevent internal damage to the PCM, the ignition must be OFF when disconnecting or reconnecting the PCM connector.

1) Install the PCM to the mounting bracket.

2) Install the PCM and mounting bracket assembly into the vehicle.

3) Reconnect the PCM connectors. Tighten
Tighten the PCM connector end fasteners to 8 N·m (70 lb in).

4) If a new PCM is being installed, program the EEPROM.

PCM Programming
1) Setup - Ensure that the following conditions have been met:
- The battery is fully charged.
- The ignition is ON.
- The cable connection at the Data Link
Connector (DLC) is secure.
2) Program the PCM using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to Techline terminal/equipment users instructions.
A) If the PCM fails to program, proceed as follows:
- Ensure that all PCM connections are OK.
- Inspect the Techline terminal/equipment for
the latest software version.
- Attempt to program the PCM. If the PCM still
cannot be programmed properly, replace the
PCM. The replacement PCM must be programmed.
B) Program the replacement PCM.

3) Perform the CKP System Variation Learn Procedure if a new PCM is installed. Refer to CKP System Variation Learn Procedure .

4) Perform the Idle Learn Procedure. Refer to Idle Learn Procedure .
5) Perform the Engine Oil Life Monitor Reset procedure if a new PCM is installed. Refer to Engine Oil Life Monitor Reset Procedure .

Functional Check
- Clear the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
- Perform the On-Board Diagnostic System Check.
- Start the engine and idle for one minute.
- Scan for DTCs using the scan tool.</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">

Comming straight from the gm dealer, they will not flash a computer on a car that has as many mods as mine. I explained to them that they arent responcible and that all they are doing is flashing the computer so it will work with my car but they will not do it. There are several people floating around that have the ability to flash it for me so that looks like my only option.

I have no earthly idea. My PCM would not even be recognized by LS1 Edit, so I just had it reflashed. The dealer did say that there was some A4 tranny PCM changes in the new flash, but thats all I know.

I just hope LS1 Edit will now be able to comunicate with my PCM. We shall see. Bottom line; The way it was, I would have never been able to get any PCM tuning.

The PCM is going to Thunder now for "mail order" tuning. It should be interseting to see how that works out.

They aren't programming it for any spark/ignition timing or fuel curves. They are solely "initializing" the PCM to work in conjunction with your BCM and to make sure the car idles. That's all. You could have a jet motor under the hood for all they care. Their programming has no effect on it other than idle.

BTW, my best friend is the service manager of a local dealer. So I have a general idea of what they will and won't do. Ohh, and mine is also a built, balanced, blueprinted, heads and cammed LS1. They don't have a problem with it.

You can also go to http://calid.gm.com/vci/ enter your VIN# and it'll pull the same update info they'll get.
