Biggest Stall For DD LT1?
Hey guys,
I was considering putting this up in Automatic trany but thats mostly LS1 guys.
Right now I have a custom 3200 stall that a bought when i built my 4l60. Its built to handle the power of a 383.
Im going to be N/A 350 for a while so i was thinking i might be able to benifit by getting a bigger stall.
I was thinking maybe a 3600, my stall right now is lose and i like it alot. Im not a fan of tight stalls.
What do you guys think i could gain in the 1/4 by switching?
THe car sees the track 4-5 times a month for 8 months out of the year too.

You shouldnt go off guess and take the advise of people with different setups than yours. Ask a LS1 guy with one of those Trex cams and he'll tell you goo 4000 because it roxxers then another guy with a 383 and a baby cam and stock gears will tell you 3100. Id get the car on the dyno then send that dyno sheet to whoevers going to do your converter and have them choose a stall and str taylored to your powerband. With that said I have a 3500. After my dyno I plan on going 3800 if it permits and doesnt leave alot on the table. I would go 4000 if I could. BTW mines a DD. Only hippies and the French fear the stall.

How much is to big depends on your setup. If youre reffering to drivability then Id say anything over 4200. On a LT1 car Id say 3700 depending on the cam and setup. I dont really see to many LT1 stalling higher than that for some reason.

I have a cc305 cam and boltons with a th350. I originally had a 3200 stall and it was not enough. My current converter is right at about 4100, and I droped 2tenths off my 60ft and 4 tenths off of my 1/4 with only a bigger stall. If you have a 4l60 you might be able to get away with something in the high 3000 range, because of the lower first gear ratio in the trans. With a th350 or th400 you will need to step it up a bit.

My bolt on 4000lb Roadmaster, drives just fine with a 3000-3200 9.5" stall. I might have it restalled to around 3500-3600rpm and have the STR (current 2.5 as I didnt think I'd race as much as I do now) bumped down a little bit..

First off, get a good TC, no matter what you decide, I have not seen mention of any bad ones in this thread.
If you get a good TC with a high STR it will be alot nicer on the street than one with a low STR. Just know when you go to the track you will need the tires/suspension and track prep to make it hook, it will hit hard (which is what I would want!! to get these boats moving!!).
A local guy has a 3800 in his bolt on DD LT1 car, he likes it. I was going to a 4k at least if I did one but mine would not be a DD and it would have a TH350.
I say in the 3500 range with a nice STR and it will be good on the street and great on the track. What is nice is the lock up of the A4s, so gas mileage should not suffer.
When I had the Yank ST3500 in the A4 of my other car it was like stockish, you didnt have to give it gas to get rolling it would pull the car from a red light, just like the stocker would. Then I swapped to a TH350 with a Art Carr 3600ish and it felt more sluggish but then swapped to a Vig 3500 and it felt more like the Yank on the street.

Exactly what Shon said. Do you even know what kind of stall or str of your current converter? I see alot of people cheap out on converters. If yours is not the correct setup for your car, there would be alot of ET to be gained with the a properly setup converter with the same stall. This could possibly be why your ET is not as good as it should be as well.

I will add to my experiences from above, I chose a TC after I did the 355 LT4 stuff to my 94PPM car, took it to the track, it didnt run any better than with bolt ons, I was PO'd to say the least!! But bit the bullet and put in a Yank (over $800 from the $400 one I took out), man, the car rolled out hard and was alot quicker!! In that case the half a second gain was just the tip of the iceburg.
I went to the TH350 b/c I was going to start spraying the car and didnt want the A4 to go out on me.

damn, some of you guys are saying 4000 for a daily driver? i had a yank 3600 in my 68firebird that i put a ls1 in and that thing drove real nice. probably only stalled to about 3200 thoguh if that. but you know the more torque an engine makes the more that the stall will stall. so if you put a 3300 stall on a pretty much stock 350, it might stall to 2800 or so. but put it on the 383 and it will stall closer to the 3300. but for a daily driver and if you do alot of city driving... i would stay away from anything over 3600
