cutout ---low end tq vs. top end power?
What's this about having a cutout and losing low end torque at the beginning?....Will this yield you more top end power with the cutout(open)?...How about having it capped(closed)?...Will it give you more low end torque and no top end power?...which is better?...please explain if I have misunderstood.....thanx! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

A cutout will not cause any loss of low end torque if the A/F ratio is optimum. If a car does lose power it will be due to the A/F ratio changing not because of a loss of backpressure.

They are talking about reversion entering the system from the cutout if it's too close to the exhaust valve. Reversion waves can indeed negate scavenging at lower RPM's and reduce torque. The RPM where the reversion is overcome depends on the distance the cutout is from the ex-valve. It generally is always under 3000 RPM no matter how close it is, so a good converter will cover this up... no problem. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
On the dyno a manual car could very well show a loss in torque @ 2000 RPM if the cutout is near the collector. Those who run the cutout behind the axle will probably not notice a loss.
The older guys would probably remember more of a loss because carburetion is affected more by reversion than EFI is.

FWIW, I wouldn't worry about losing low end if your car in running well. My car gained across the board when I had a cutout. To be specific, 17 RWHP.

I had the opportunity to check out the power differences with my 3" cutout. I intially had a bad crappy cut job over axle cutout done by a muffler shop, then little by little I had to file it larger. At first my car seemed sluggish and as I opened it up I most defnitely gained power/torque, but as I filed it to the full diameter of the cutout to reduce turbulence popping, I started loosing low end slightly. I do alot of freeway miles in LA, about 400 a week, and I am able to maintain a higher crusing speed and I have saved an enormous amount of fuel, but I do hate losing low end and might get the SLP loudmouth, AKA fancy cutout. I dont know what else to do with my intake in regards to air/fuel ratio without spending a lot of dough. I have FTRA, Direct-flow,K&N, Delphi 85mm MAF descrenned, SLP smooth bellows, EGR Mod, SLP Y-pipe, Magnaflow Muffler. I will have peace of mind with an all SLP setup, and LM systems are not too pricy. Texas Speed and Performance has them on special for $299.
