I've used simple old brake cleaner to take off about anything I've picked up off the road. Didn't hurt my painted wheels at all... but I also didn't soak the wheels in the stuff or anything. Just spray it on a clean rag and rub.

Just to be safe I'd try it on a less noticable spot first. Don't blame me if it doesn't work or if it screws something up, but it worked great on my Firehawk's wheels.

Good luck

Be careful with brake cleaner . . . I used to use it all the time for all sorts of things, but a buddy of mine was working on a Cadi STS, and used some to clean up the wheels, and it washed off the "dull" area between the spokes of the chrome wheels.

3M wax and adhesive remover -$7 at auto parts store or retail stores, sold in the car care area. Just wax them up good afterwards.

WD-40 will also usually take off tar and grease.
