Default hand porting

When hand porting a set of stock(608) heads, what shape and volume should I go for. I gots stock cubes with an ls6 intake and if I feel confident in whatever port work I do, i might put in a different cam. It's go'n in a 69 chevy 1/2 ton truck so i need all the torque i can get. My cousin sugested just smoothing up the ports. I'd like to gut'm out as far as they'll go and then some..........."grin" . If some one could recommend a combo (ie. cam, intake, etc.) I'd really like that. I gots the 4l60e and 3.73 rear with 275 wheels, stock 98 exaust manifolds and most of the free mod stuff.
