Default Are stock LS1 heads worth porting?

I just heard that I can get heads ported and polished locally for $300. Would it be worth it to do this and just a cam instead of the heads / cam idea I've been thinking about? How would a local shop working on LS1 heads compare to the Patriot or TSP PRC heads? Thanks,
-Marc

Marc, I have a set of an LS1 853 casting that were ported and polished with dual springs and bigger valves. They really awoke my trans am . I really mean that. I guess it all depends on the person that is going to do the job. Good luck!!!

It all depends on how good the porting is. If you have someone local do it, ask for a flow sheet. There are many talented hand porters out there. We do have several options we can offer you. If you have any questions, please give us a call.

I have a set of 853 heads and was thinking the same thing.

Was also informed by a friend that if you have never ported any ls1 heads, that it would be better off that you let the pros do it, as it is easy to hit a water jacket.

It is better off to let the pro's do it, and they surely will get the heads to flow better than an ameture will. However theres a good bit on info on home porting and even some cross sections of heads that were cut in pieces to show the trouble spots. I like having the satisfaction to telling people that theyre my heads when they ask what ive got.

Id try to get some 4.8, 5.3 heads for more compression. If they can be found cheap enough.

The ls6 heads already have a good bit of compression, and wouldnt need to be milled much to bump it up even higher. A thin gasket will tighten the quuench as well as raise compression. Milling will of course lower P to V clearance, but then again so will aftermarket valves. New valves will usually have a larger valve margin, and theyre usually hung lower than stockers. If you were using a cam that has a close P to V on stock heads, youre probably gonna have to flycut anyway. I say why not go with the ls6 heads that have better port runners...

Very true. I was thinking if you could get the 4.8/5.3 heads for free.

I think that compression would be worth more than a cam with 10 more degrees of duration with less compression. Some dynos have shown that 450rwhp is possible with less than 230 duration.

To do it correct it's best to have the heads ported by a CNC machine with a good program. This allows the ports to be much more consistant. I'm not implying that a local shop can't do a good port job. I just don't think you can get much in hand porting for $300.

I wouldn't mind getting my 241's ported and polished. Then possibly milled for some compression. I think i will give Gunnar a call myself.
