Default tranny problems, what gives?

on a side note the tranny just started doing this out of the blue last night, absolutely no warning.

basically my tranny is slipping, but its only 3rd and 4th. when it shifts into 3rd it just revs(maybe 4000-4500) but if you bump the gas a little when its doing it, it floats into 4th, and will just rev there(4500+) then if you rev it a little higher it grabs and almost feels fine. 3rd and 4th are the only gears that seem to be effected, 1&2 feel totally normal. anybody have any similar experience, and what might the cause be? i figured if it is the converter it would slip all across the board, and thats not the case. the fluid looks fine, could use a change probably(been 15k miles since verter install) and it looks like it might be a little overfilled, but its hard to tell because it seems i get a different reading off the stick everytime. but again, if that was a problem wouldnt it affect all gears?

thanks in advance for any help.
