Default WS6 Details

I hate to start a new thread asking this but I searched and I didn't come up with anything. Does anyone know if the 1998 WS6's had chrome tips or if any of the 4th gen ws6's had chrome tips from the factory. A buddy of mine noticed that I didn't have chrome tips and said it wasn't a true WS6 because it didn't have them. Although I'm fairly certain that my t/a is a ws6. But now i'm questioning it. Also is there a way to check the VIN or anything to see if its a ws6. Any information or a nudge in the right direction is greatly appreciated. Thx

Look at the RPO codes, if it says WS6, then the car is a WS6. In mine the RPO codes are in the glove box not sure if it is any different in LS1 cars.

Thanks for your quick reply. I checked the glove box and I didn't find the RPO codes there. Must be somewhere else for 4th gens.

RPO codes are on the Drivers Side door. Open the door and look on the door jamb.

And I'm pretty sure no WS6s came with chrome. Unless someones thinking of those little skinny pipes in like 01-02 I think. Are those chrome?

No chrome tips. There were factory aluminum tips that were welded on the stock exhaust, but they weren't polished or chromed.

'98 WS6 and SS cars came from the factory w/ the 3" SOTL (single on the left) shiny round aluminum exhaust tip. '99+ WS6/SS came with smaller 2" or 2.5" dual round shiny aluminum tips. SLP did offer exhaust options on SS cars.

If your '98 WS6 (check the RPO decal on the driver's door) doesn't have the SOTL, then someone's put a cat-back on it.

Thanks for all the information. Looked at the RPO codes and turns out it says WS9 on there. Aparently it used to be a formula and was converted over to a WS6. Just wondering though....did the formula use the same 'high performance' tires as the WS6...because it says to use the same type of tire the WS6 uses on the door jamb. Thanks again.

I think the Formulas and Trans Am's (Mine is a 1995 LT1 TA, a 4th gen too, and mine are in the glove box. Anyone else have this I never looked on the door for them because I found them in my glove box.) recieved the 245/60/16 or the 225/60/16 the ones with 245/60/16 size tires had no governer. Only the Firehawks, WS6 cars, and SS camaros recieved the 17 inch wheels.

Default Clarification......

All V8 Pontiac 4-gen f-bods will have RPO WS9:

WS9 : MODEL CONVERSION, FORMULA
(this is what seperates the V6 Firebirds from the V8 Formulas and T/As)

T/As will ALSO have WS4 in addition to WS9:

WS4 : MODEL CONVERSION, TRANS AM

WS6s will ALSO have RPO WS6:

WS6 : PERFORMANCE PACKAGE, SPECIAL

So a WS6 T/A will have WS4, WS6 and WS9. A WS6 Formula will have just WS6 and WS9. If theres no WS6 RPO code, it ain't a WS6.

For the 4-th gen Pontiac F-bods, WS6 included 275-40-17 tires & 17x9 rims (except for '97 WS6 'verts, which came w/ 16").

All LS1 ('98+) f-bods had the RPO decal on the driver's door. I believe all LT1 f-bods had the RPO decal in the glove box (I know my '94 Z28 'vert did, it's possible they moved it over to the door sometime later, but definately by '98 it was on the door).

Thanks a ton man. This clears everything up. I got the WS9 and WS6 RPO codes so it is a WS6 Formula not a WS6 Trans Am. Its been converted over to a Trans Am apparently, that's why there's all the confusion.

No problem. But what do you mean it was "converted over to a Trans Am"?? Because that'd almost be a shame since Formula WS6s are much more rare than T/A WS6s, and might be worth more someday. The basic differences between a Formula and T/A is the T/A has stepped-up standard equipment (leather seats and T-tops for example), and externally the only cosmetic differences are the hatch (w/ up-lift spoiler), lower rear bumper/valence (w/ exhaust cutouts), front nose (w/ centered fog lamps) and "ground effects" mouldings below the doors (and of course the scripts on the door & tail panel).

Either way, it's a real WS6 and that's all that matters.

ALL TRANS AM'S START OUT AS A FORMULA!!!

All pontiac F-bodys start out life as a V6 firebird. Then you add the V8 option and it becomes a Formula, then if the owner wants a Trans Am they add the Y82 option which adds the T/A nose, side skirts, rear bumper cover, high rise spoiler, and the rest of the T/A options.

Your car is a WS6 Trans Am, it has not been "converted" to a T/A. It is just the way GM coded the cars when they setup the option packages.

Also the LT1 4th gens the RPO sticker was in the glove box or on the center console. The LS1 4th gens the RPO code sticker is on the drivers side door jamb.

Maybe I can clear up some of the confusion
WS9= Formula conversion Pkg
W66= Formula Merchandise Pkg
Y82= Trans Am Merchandise Pkg
WS6= Performance Suspension Pkg

Here are the codes and what they equal out to

WS9 W66 = Firebird Formula
WS9 Y82 = Firebird Trans Am
WS9 W66 WS6 = Firebird Formula WS6
WS9 Y82 WS6 = Firebird Trans Am WS6
