I am in the middle of building a FD LS1 swap. I will be making a crossmember pretty soon. I dont have the money to buy the LS1 I plan to use for the swap right now. But I really would like to get started on the corssmember. So I will need something to mock everything up with. I found a 99-01 4.8L complete engine besides ecu, harness and manifolds for $350 at my door. I just want to see if I can use that engine to make the crossmeber and then later sell it and get the LS1 and T-56. I just want to make sure all the exterior dimensions are the same. I realize the intake manifolds are different but besides that, outside dimensions should be the same correct. Thanks

if you're looking to get something just as a mockup. . . . then goto the junk yard, and get yourself a blown up 4.8. I'm pretty sure that the 5.7 LS1 and 4.8 have the same motor mount holes. I don't see any reason to buy a running 4.8 unless you're going to try and drive this car once it's been mocked up. put that money twards the build and not something that's not needed.
Get a block and some maniflolds and just mock things up.

I thought about getting a blown motor from the junk yard. But how much cheaper will I get one for than $350 delievered. Also I have a friend that wants to do a v8 swap in his 01 Sonoma so he is prepared to buy the egine when I am done for the same price. So that is great I will be able to use the 4.8L for mockup sense everything is the same. But as for the oil pan, as they small differences. They are both rear sump I assume. Is it worth it to pick up a LS1 oil pan and will it fit on the 4.8L. I dont want to get the subframe made and go to bolt the LS1 or LS2 whichever I decide on and have it not fit. Thanks for the help.

The pans are interchangeable, you just have to change the oil pickup with it.

Good I can just get a pan and throw it on for mock up and leave the pickup off. I wont be starting the engine in the FD it will strictly be for making the subframe. Thanks
