Default LT1 won't start - Any thoughts?!?!

I have a '94 Trans Am that doesnt seem to want to start. Ever since the day i bought it over 3 years ago, if it sits for any long period of time, it doesnt like to start. Say, for example, if it goes a week without being run, it has some trouble... then it'll fire and blow lots of smoke out the rear for a couple seconds, and then run fine and dandy.
Welp, since i got the LS1, i let the car sit for the summer, making sure it got started once a week (its at my parent's place). However, they let it go about a month wihtout starting, and now it won't budge. You can let it crank and crank and crank, and the most you'll get is a small burst every once in a while, but nothing promising that it even plans on going. Any thoughts on what i can do? I havent tried any ether, or starting fluid, for i dont know how safe it is to spray any of this down the throttle body. I really need help.. This thing has to run!! The LS1 is getting TT's, and i need my other baby in the meantime.
