According to Arp the connecting usually goes first. The biggest thing on a two bolt is rpm is the killer rather than hp. If you buy a main girdle for a two bolt block, to keep the caps from trying to walk, you can get them to hold the same hp and rpm as a 4 bolt block or 4 bolt splayed main motor. I have been doing a lot of work for a customer on his alcohol dragster. This info is coming off of results with his motors and his buddies motors. We are making about 820 hp at 7800 rpm at the FLYWHEEL. As far as the stock engine blocks they are very strong and can handle more than 800 hp.
This info was from the late John Lingenfelter while researching limit's of the stock block for my 97 Trans Am. The best place that I have found for main girdles is @ www.cnc-motorsports.com. When you look up the main girdle just look it up as a 350 SBC, they are the same as a lt-1 block. You will not be able to reuse your stock windage tray on this set up. Canton makes a very nice oil pan for our cars that has internal baffle doors, a crank scaper, and a windage tray. You may need to do some minor clearancing to the main girdle depending on what length rods you are useing.
