Default Shifters- please explain some simple stuff to me

Just looking at a new shifter.

i have a 4L80e with a fully manual valve body with a normal shift pattern.

What i need to able to do is shift very quickly form reverse to first, whilst at times having "stops" between 4-3-2-1 so that i can't over or under shift! Shifting 2 gears by accident could be disastrous.

is there something that can do this? what exactly is a ratchet shifter- does it just gave stops between each gear, or does a ratchet have a lever to lift?

any help much appreciated.

Ratcheting shifters stop between each gear. They cannot be pushed up or down more than 1 at a time without stopping after each shift. Often times they also isolate/lock out reverse and park if you are in a moving gear.
